In addition to air renewal, ventilation is an essential parameter for the proper functioning of a growing space. Air movement provided by fans such as revolution silenced EC fans, facilitate a high 0²/CO² exchange of stomata (= gain of liveliness) and promote an expansion of the plant structure (= production gain).

In order to boost plant growth and maximize production (+50% yield!), hydroponic cultivators use CO2 injection to shorten crop cycle and raise grow to ideal 1200ppm. This technique consists of releasing carbon dioxide into the culture chamber and utilising carbon filter kits to open the pores of carbon to give it incredibly high organic absorption properties.

Through extraction/intraction and ventilation, the temperature of the culture chamber is controlled to a certain extent. For perfect management grow room heaters allow you to reach ideal levels of 23 °C (adequate range between 20 °C and 25 °C).

High Specification Carbon Pore Size

This filter uses virgin Australian RC412 Carbon, widely considered to be one of the superior carbons for air filtration. With its very low ash content (less than 13%), it is a virgin granulated product so it can be compacted very tightly, leaving no air spaces for organic compounds (odours) to escape.

The RAM Pro-Active Carbon Filters feature a very high specification carbon pore size of 0.02 micron, making it far more absorbent of volatile organic smells and more ‘attractive’, so the odour elements stick like glue and become absorbed. Inline drying and dehumidifying are used in the filling process to make sure the carbon is in peak condition before the filter is compacted and special expansion foam on the neck makes sure that the compaction rate of the carbon remains high at all times. Avoid lower quality filters with poor compaction that allow volatile smells to escape before contact with the carbon.

CarboAir Carbon Filters - Europe's Premium Hydroponic Management System

The function of carbon filter kits is to absorb organic particles and other airborne materials produced by the plant during growth and blooming. The process involves the filtration and evacuation of organic particles and other airborne materials produced by the plant. Carboair carbon filters have been developed to filter VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from smaller grow room environments and offer excellent filtration of air without compromising airflow. Hytec supplied CarboAir carbon filters come supplied with a CarboAir™ Filter, extractor fan (options), 5 metres of combi ducting and the 3 clips need to assemble the kit in the size you require.

Virgin Activated Granular Carbon

The virgin carbon is activated at temperatures above 1000°C in a humid environment. The process opens the pores of the carbon to give it incredibly high absorption properties of organic particles and other airborne pollutants. The carbon is produced to very high standards in Europe, unlike Chinese filters which often contain cheaper blends and risk water contamination during shipping. Being produced in the EU enables better quality control. The carbon is produced to EN12915 which means it is pure enough to be used in food and drink applications.

Unique Filtration System Housing

CarboAir carbon filters use an industrial galvanised steel filter casing, Using the highest quality materials enabled it to use the finest mesh. The filter mesh is 55.5% open for the best-unrestricted air flow through the filter. Carboair carbon filters have better flow rates, enabling them to utilise a thicker carbon bed compared to competitors. The top and bottom flanges are preformed. The carbon is packed into the casing and then placed onto vibration plates which results in a higher quantity of carbon in the housing without crushing the carbon granules also resulting in no air pockets allowing VOCs to pass through unfiltered.

Inline Fans & Revolution Silence EC Fans ~ Ultimate Hydroponic Management

In addition to the control over the temperature, the use of fans allows a control of humidity (or hygrometry). Expressed as a percentage, the quantity of water available in the air is measured with a hygrometer. In most cases, a hydroponic grow tent housing plants in vegetative phase (growth) requires the establishment of a humidifier (cold steam and already equipped with a hygrostat preferably). To maintain the necessary 50 to 70% hygrometry; 45 to 50% relative humidity is sufficient for flowering, to avoid any mould. These measurements ensure optimal gas exchange at the stoma level.

How to calculate the size Ø and the extraction rate of the fan m³/h:

The following method is well known and has been approved by many growers:

  • Exhaust required for fan capacity (m³ / h) = [Volume of active growth zone (m³) x change of air per unit of time (hours) x [Rate loss - Charcoal filter]
  • To calculate the volume, multiply the length x the width x the height.
  • In our example with two lamps of 600W, it gives 1,20mx2,40mx2x50m which gives a culture volume of 7,20m³. When you know your volume, you must multiply it by the volume of air to be renewed per hour.

NOTE: For the majority of indoor gardens without air conditioning or CO², the rule of thumb is 1 per minute. In this case, multiply the volume of culture by 60 to calculate the volume of air to be renewed per hour.

Finally, when a charcoal filter is attached to the fan, it is expected to decrease efficiency by 25%. This data is variable and depends on the age of the filter, the length and the circulating power of the ducts used between the fan and the filter and other factors. To evaluate this decrease in efficiency by 25, simply multiply by 1.25.

If we record the equation to our grow tent example this equates to:

  1. [Required air evacuation capacity (m³ / h)] = [Active growth volume area (m³) x 60] x 1.25
  2. [Required air evacuation capacity (m³ / h)] = ((1,2x2,4x2,5) x60) x 1,25

= 540 m³/h

The end result is the minimum extraction size needed.

Airflow: 540 m³/h

If the growing chamber is in a very well insulated area like a basement, then using that number should be fine. On the other hand, if the growing chamber is located in a location that is very exposed to heat and natural sunlight, such as an upstairs room or an attic, then the size of the extractor needed should be increased by approximately 25%.

By knowing the size of the room and the number of lamps that will be used, you can work on the required ventilation in m3 per hour (m³/h)

The optimal temperature for hydroponic cultivation is between 20°C and 25°C, ideally at 24°C. Through extraction/intraction and ventilation, the temperature of the grow tent is controlled to a certain extent; maintaining a good temperature is difficult in summer when the ambient heat is added to that of the propagation lighting or during winter when increasingly changeable weather affects external conditions.

Two solutions: use an air conditioner or trigger the lighting phase at dusk for summer or make a smart move and install one of our Oil-Filled grow room heaters to help maintain stable grow room temperatures throughout the cold, dark months of autumn and winter. In fact, there’s no guarantee that you won’t need the precious heat output from these units at times during the spring and summer too always try to maintain your grow room temperature around 24°C.

Technical Details

It is important that temperature variations do not exceed more than 10°C between day and night to compensate for any stress that plants may experience. It is advisable to connect a thermostat to the extractor and the interactor in order to automate the management of internal temperature variations within the grow room.
