The technology and quality of these products have evolved considerably over the past ten years. Digital Ballasts, such as the maxibright daylight, regulate volts and watts electronically with reduced power consumption. Digital Ballasts are the most economical solution to control powerful light sources as they do not create resistance, thus, produce almost no heat or noise and can be used with all fluocompacts; whatever the power of the neon.
This is the most commonly used type of transformer. Electronic ballasts have a number of significant benefits if you choose to light your grow room with HPS or MH bulbs.
First, digital ballasts produce on average 25% more efficient lighting than magnetic ballasts (85% for magnetic ballast versus 99% for digital ballast). They are also very quiet, more economical in terms of power consumption and significantly increase the life of your lamps.
Note: There are bulbs like plasma lamps and CMDs, such as the maxibright horizon, that are specially designed for digital ballasts.
Magnetic ballasts serve to transform the current of electrical circuits. The ballast must imperatively correspond to the wattages of the bulbs used (MH, HPS, Neon's). The most effective way to use a ballast for HID lamps is to be looped. There is less resistance to electricity when the ballasts are mounted in series on a circuit; therefore, less electricity is lost during transmission. Magnetic ballasts connected in series are powered by more current; thus, the grounding must be powerful. Directing a fan towards the ballast cools it and makes it more efficient.
The use of a ballast is not systematic; for example, it will be of no use in the case of lighting via CFL. However, its acquisition will be essential if you opt for lighting with HPS and MH lamps. For T5 and LED SMD panels, the ballast is generally delivered with ramps and panels.
